The letter

“Get up, you are already late son”, I opened my eyes with greatest of my efforts. My mother was holding a cup of milk and anxiety her. I got up making the conventional excuses of stomach ache and incomplete homework, but all in vain, my father was adamant that I should not miss school for such lame reasons. Without any aversion I sipped the milk, got my self ready (with the help of my mother) for school. As I was leaving for the school my father came to me and gave a new Apsara pencil, it was enough to make up for the morning admonishment meanwhile the auto driver was shouting Ankit so I hurried up and got myself seated. Suddenly my eyes stuck on a girl who was new to the auto. She had big eyes, bob cut hairs and an ignorant expression. As the auto speeded her hair came over her face and she took care that they were rightly placed behind her ears. But after many distortion and amendments she gave up, allowed her hair to cover half of her face. It was my chance to take the initiative and place the hair where their right place was obviously behind the ears, I got a smile in return and it made me happier than possession of Apsara. My day in school was awful as I was caught many times for not paying the so called attention. But thinking about the girl, her eyes, her smile and her hair seemed to be more interesting than to think which one is greater ninety nine or forty nine?

I came to know the girl lived in my neighborhood and soon she became the part of my gang. When we played hide and seek I would always neglect her when it was my chance to seek and would deliberately hide myself in a place such that she found me easily. I always took her in my team when we played cricket or pitok. I happily ate neem and other leaves hypothetically made by her when we played ghar ghar in which she would always be my wife. I always shared my chocolates with her. I would beat all those who called her boy for her bob cut. I was her hero who would always protect her.

Three months passed she became one the most important persons in my life. Life was not easy, my performance in the school deteriorated, teachers complained I was not attentive in the class. I was ceased to play, this led to abetment of our meeting. The only time I saw her was during our journey to school. My life became dull, I was not able concentrate anywhere, I disliked everything even chocolates, ice-cream, tom and jerry, Archana was all over my mind. I heard my cousins discussing love and they too told the same symptoms. “But how can I fall in love I’m just ten, a kid doesn’t fall in love except with his books” these were the thought gyrating in my mind. But I soon realized it was love as I loved my mom since I was zero. I wanted to express myself, my love but din had the courage to say it face to face so I decided to write a letter, yes a love letter.
“
Dear Archana,

I like to play with u, dance with u, run with u and share my chocolate with u. I don’t like when people call u a boy. I want to be your teddy which is always with u. Every body says I’m too small to fall in love but I LOVE U.

Your love
Ankit

”

It was her birthday today and the best day to express my love. I kept the letter in between the greeting card. I wore best of my outfits and went to her house but her maid told me that she was not there. Hours past by but she din came. It was 11 in the night I was ordered to sleep which I followed. Next day I woke up without any efforts maybe because I never slept. I heard my mom and dad discussing about some accident in which the whole family died, when I asked my dad who were they he replied our neighbors- Purohits. It was something I couldn’t believe. Everything was shattered. I forced to go to school without my will even tears couldn’t convince my father. I sat on the auto. The auto she was not there sitting in front of me, holding the rod tight with one hand and adjusting her hair with other. In school everything was nuisance the teacher teaching, useless mathematics, impractical poems, explored geography and even my tiffin having maggi which I din eat. I came back from the school threw my bag, hugged my mother and cried a lot. I was quite old to fall in love but far too young to understand what death was and to convince myself  how will I live without her, with whom will I share my chocolates, who will be my wife in ghar ghar, for whom will I beat Shanu and who will give me a kiss when a hit a six? We write a letter and we read it many times in the hope that they might listen to it someday. I liked watching the sky because she might be there shining somewhere in the sky with my grandmother.
